These last couple of months have been busy finalising the manuscript of my new book with the publisher. I am now please to confirm that Food from the Sea - The Future of Seafood will be launched in London on 9 June 2025.
This new book will look at the opportunities and challenges facing the global seafood industry. With its low carbon footprint, seafood is a climate smart food choice that is also highly nutritious. This, together with the incredible potential of aquaculture, means that seafood is part of the solution to climate change and global hunger.
Instead, seafood is increasingly seen as a problem. Fishing and fish farming are often portrayed as industries that are not sustainable and have a negative impact on the marine environment. The modern seafood industry now has an increasingly controversial and fraught relationship with some parts of the environmental movement. Believing it is misunderstood, the seafood industry portrays its critics as urban based intellectuals who do not understand coastal and island society. The environmental movement, on the other hand, argues that the seafood industry is not doing enough to become sustainable and is in denial. Food from the Sea tells the story of this conflict through the lives of people involved in both sides of the debate.
The book also covers other important issues facing the seafood industry such as the net zero challenge, how the potential of AI might be unlocked, the ongoing scandal of human rights abuses, how the awesome potential of aquaculture might be unlocked and what needs to be done to enable more women to become fishers.
